By Keren Raveh & Hagar Shapira
Planetarium Levinsky is an art installation composed of a geodesic dome-shaped structure, an inside projection that fills the entire dome surface, and a performance of "The cosmonauts operators".
Planetarium Levinsky first popped up on December 2015 in Tel Aviv’s annual lights festival, Night Light, and was one of the main attractions. Sincce then the planetarium exhibit in The Red House Gallery in Tel Aviv and in Tel Aviv's Cinematheque, as part of a homage festival to 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanely Kubrick.
THE JOURNEY
Get Ready for Take Off!
The planetarium provides a unique experience of a journey on which the visitors enter a surreal territory with the operating cosmonauts leading them inside a silver handmade dome and they are taken into a world of faraway galaxies and
imagination.
The Visitors are required to stand in line and wait for the next “take off”, remove their shoes before entering and lay
down inside, in groups of 12 people.
Inside we created a space of escapism, a dream-like Kraft sensation and loss of gravity that connects with a more primary, childhood experience. The video shown is a collage that combines real planetariums projections with fantasy, surrealism and stop-motion animation accompanied by original
soundtrack. The journey takes about 7 minutes.
The dome structure and aesthetic capabilities create a feeling of intimacy and belonging among the visitors in a naive universal way of a joint experience.
